Frequently asked questions

Is TapeNote Windows only?

Yes, the desktop app is for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). Recording system sound reaches deep into the operating system, and TapeNote is built for Windows. The web library and share links work in any modern browser, including on a Mac or a phone.

Will there be a Mac version?

TapeNote is going multiplatform. After Windows come a browser extension and mobile apps; the web library already works on any computer. A Mac app is on the list, without a date yet. Want it? Let us know by e-mail; it counts.

Which languages are recognised?

Dutch, English, Spanish and German. TapeNote detects which of those four is spoken. If it gets it wrong, you choose the language by hand. If a recording switches language, it works best when you set the main language.

How accurate is it?

TapeNote uses Whisper large-v3-turbo, one of the best open speech models. With clear speech and little background noise the result usually reads well without many corrections. Names, jargon, people talking over each other and poor sound cause more errors. That is why you can edit any sentence quickly, and the original is always kept.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Recording, transcribing, editing and exporting work without internet and without an account. You only need internet for the cloud: sync, the web library, share links and AI summaries.

Where is my data stored?

Without the cloud: only on your own PC, in your Documents\TapeNote folder. Note: if OneDrive syncs your Documents folder, that copy goes through OneDrive. With the cloud on, your transcripts (and audio, if you upload it) are stored in the EU, in Frankfurt. More on Privacy and security.

May I record other people?

That is your own responsibility. If you record a conversation or meeting, say so beforehand and ask for consent; often the law requires it, certainly where personal data is involved. Videos, podcasts and courses are usually protected by copyright: a transcript for your own use is different from sharing or publishing it. Also check the platform’s terms. This is not legal advice.

What does the cloud cost?

Nothing during the beta. After that there is a free plan (including sync for up to 50 transcripts, 3 active share links and 3 AI summaries a month), Pro and Team. Local transcription stays free forever. See Pricing.

Can I cancel?

During the beta you pay nothing and can stop at any time. Paid plans will run per month or per year and can be cancelled towards the end of the period. Deleting your account wipes all your data in the cloud; you simply keep the desktop app and your local recordings.

Can I export my transcripts?

Always, also on the free plan. The desktop app exports to TXT, Markdown, Word, PDF and subtitles (SRT and VTT), many recordings at once if you like. The web library exports to TXT, Markdown, SRT and VTT. You are never locked in.

How do I get into the beta?

Sign up on the waitlist and confirm your e-mail address. We let people in small groups at a time; you then get a personal invitation with a download link.
